Dr. G. Ananthasubramaniam had worked in Tamil Nadu Medical Service since 1956, in the capacity as Tutor/Assistant Professor of Medicine till 1967, and later as Reader/Professor/ Director in the Department of Medicine in various State Medical Colleges. He retired as Director, Institute of Internal Medicine, Madras Medical College on 30th November 1990. On the whole he has to his credit about 40 years of teaching experience for undergraduates and postgraduates, exclusive of over 2 years of experience in teaching Physiology.

He has had Institutional Administrative Experience as Superintendent, Government Royapettah Hospital, Madras, for over 4 years and as Dean, Madras Medical College for a period of 5 months.

He was Member of the Academic Council of University of Madras, and Standing Academic Board of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. He was also Member of the Empowered Senate of the Medical University, which elected him as its representative to the Medical Council of India. He served in the Medical Council till 1994.

He had training in Cardiology at the Institute of Cardiology and National Heart Hospital, London and Doppler Echocardiography training at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. He was elected as Fellow, American College of Cardiology (FACC), in March 1989, Fellow, American College of Angiology (FACA) in April 1995 and as Fellow American College of Physicians in 2006.

The Voluntary Health Services, Adyar, Madras, where he is working as Honorary Consultant Physician and Cardiologist since 1963, had given him Community Service Award for completing 25 years in that capacity. He has completed 50 years of such service at VHS, where he had served the poor and under privileged sick patients in an honorary capacity  

He has about 43 papers published in National and International Journals.

He was given the “20th Century Achievements Award” and the “Man of the year 1995” Award by the American Biographical Institute, North Carolina, USA in 1995. His name has been included in the Fourth Edition of ‘Five Hundred Leaders of Influence’ published in 1996, by the said Institute, which has also designated him as Deputy Governor of the Board of Governors of the Institute, an assignment for lifetime.
