- Dr. Mohan did his undergraduate studies (MBBS) at Madras Medical College, Madras between 1971-76. He got Prizes & Distinctions during undergraduate studies in Bio-Chemistry, Pharmacology, Nutrition Prize, Therapeutics Prize and Special Distinction in Pathology, Bacteriology, Ophthalmology and Forensic Medicine.
- He finished his postgraduate education at Madras Medical College during 1979-81) and obtained Dr.R.V.Rajam Gold Medal for standing First in the Madras University in the M.D. (General Medicine) Exam.
- He completed his Ph.D in the year 1987 from the University of Madras.
- He also obtained his D.Sc by Thesis from The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Madras in the year 1997.
- Dr.Mohan was instrumental in setting up, with his late wife Dr.Rema Mohan, (who was also his classmate), the Dr.Mohan’s Group of Institutions, which includes the Dr.Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre (DMDSC), the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) and the Dr.Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA) apart from several not for profit Trusts and charitable clinics, through which lifelong free treatment is offered to thousands of people with diabetes.
- Currently, Dr.Mohan oversees 50 diabetes hospitals and clinics located in 32 cities and eight states of India and has over half a million registered diabetic patients, making it the largest chain of diabetes centres in the world.
- Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA) runs courses, both inhouse as well as at a national level and has trained over 16,000 of physicians in Diabetology apart from diabetes educators, dieticians, and nurses.
- The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) was established by Dr.Mohan is Asia’s largest standalone diabetes research centre.
- Dr.Mohan has a record number of over 1600 publications including 1000 original papers, 400 review articles and 200 chapters to text books on diabetes, which have attracted over 167,000 citations and has a h-index of 144. Dr. Mohan is the highest ranked medical researcher in India.
- Dr. Mohan’s publications as include the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Nature, Nature Genetics, Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Lancet Global Health, Lancet Planet Health, Lancet Public Health, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Diabetologia and most of the other leading diabetes and endocrine journals.
- For his pioneering research work, Dr.Mohan has been conferred 6 Doctorates, 21 Fellowships and over 200 awards. This includes the Dr.B.C.Roy National Award (Medical Council of India), the Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Centenary Award (ICMR), Fellowships of all four Royal Colleges of Physicians of UK, ie., FRCP (London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ireland), Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship from Germany, Wellcome Trust Fellowship, UK, Fellowships of all 3 Science Academies of India including Indian National Science Academy (FNA), Honorary Doctorate from Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, Fellowship of the World Academy of Sciences, Italy and Mastership of the American College of Physicians (second Indian to be given this honour).
- In 2018, Dr. Mohan was conferred the Dr. Harold Rifkin Award by the American Diabetes Association and he is the first Indian to receive this award.
- He was also conferred FRS by Royal Society of Edinburgh.
- In 2012, Dr. Mohan was awarded the Padma Shri, by the Government of India.
- Dr.Mohan’s autobiography ‘Making Excellence a Habit: The Secret to Building a World-Class Healthcare System in India’, was published by Penguin India. His latest book ‘Banting, Bose and Beyond’ was published by Notion Press. Both are bestsellers on Amazon.
