It was his childhood dream to contribute something for the betterment of humanity as far as Dr. Mohan Rajan is concerned.  Belonging to the third generation of a Doctors family, medicine came naturally to him. It was during the time the healthcare scenario in the country was witnessing a paradigm shift with the private sector starting to play a dominant role, Dr. Mohan Rajan decided to draw a blueprint for taking ophthalmic services to the social fringes. When the healthcare services delivered by the private sector were perceived more as a business model, He brought in completely a new perspective to healthcare delivery by seamlessly blending medicine with philanthropy. His life’s mission today stands more complete with the establishment of Rajan Eye Care Hospital and Chennai Vision Charitable Trust, the twin enterprises providing world class eye care services to the marginalized sector. He is aware of the long distance he had covered in creating a Blind Free India in this part of the world and created an indelible story in the annals of Indian ophthalmic history.

Despite a concerted effort both from the public and private sector to enhance the quantum and quality of our services in healthcare, we still find that there is a huge gap between demand supply. In India we have less than 1 doctor for every 1000 as compared to 2.3 in USA. Further the problem assumes immensity in healthcare, when we take into consideration factors like affordability and accessibility. We still have a long way to go. At Rajan Eye Care, we as a management philosophy, are making an attempt to address these issues to a certain extent in this part of the country, with the limited resources, which we have at our disposal.

The Chennai Vision Charitable Trust (CVCT called in short) was established as a community ophthalmology wing of Rajan Eye Care Hospital in 1995, with the prime objective of providing eye care to the economically marginalised cross section of the society in and around Chennai. CVCT serves the poor patients who live in the rural areas and have no possibility of receiving proper eye care services. The Trust takes eye care services to the doorsteps of the poor who live in these villages and provides free eye screenings, surgeries, including but not limited to cataract and corneal transplants, glasses and medicine. The activities of CVCT also includes delivery of ophthalmic services in semi-urban areas and slums in the cities.

The task was daunting, this medical doctor, ophthalmic surgeon, philanthropist, social worker and Rotarian has left no stone unturned. More than all the different facets of Dr Mohan Rajan, during the last 35 years of his professional career as a doctor, he has metamorphosed the delivery of ophthalmic services in India in terms of content and quality. Through his devoted and dedicated selfless service he has touched the lives of several millions, most being in the socio-economic fringes.

Pursuit of medical education was a natural career choice. He earned a seat in the prestigious Madras Medical College in the M.B.B.S. course, and passed with distinction.  To specialize in Ophthalmology, he joined Sankara Nethralaya, where he was adjudged the Best Outgoing Student in the batch of Diploma in Ophthalmology in 1989. While at Sankara Nethralaya, he took up a Fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery, under the mentorship of Dr S S Badrinath. Subsequently, he qualified to become a Diplomate of the National Board in Ophthalmology.
In the world of Rotary, a service-led organization, Dr Mohan Rajan has held several prestigious positions in his Rotary Club, and at the District level. He played a key role in establishing the Rotary Rajan Eye Bank for harvesting eyes from donors and effectively transplanting them for providing sight to the blind. The hospital has performed over 6000 corneal transplantations so far. The collaboration with Rotary Club has enabled him to spread his efforts in community ophthalmology in rural areas and provide quality eye care free of cost.

In 2010, Project Nethra Vahana, which is a Rural Mobile Ophthalmology Van with advanced equipment for treating diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, corneal disorders, macular degeneration etc., with a view to clear a huge volume of curable blindness.
