🔹Kalarickal was born on January 6, 1948 in Kottayam, Kerala. He studied medicine and completed MBBS from Government Medical College, Kottayam in 1974. Then he completed MD from Stanley Medical College, Chennai in 1978 and DM in 1981 from Madras Medical College, Chennai.
🔹Soon after his studies, Dr. Kalarickal worked as Cardiology Consultant at Overseas. Thereafter, he joined Emory University, Atlanta, United States, where he got trained in angioplasty under Dr. Andreas Gruentzig, (the Father of Coronary Angioplasty), who was the first cardiologist to perform the balloon angioplasty on a coronary artery in 1977.
🔹Upon his return to India in 1985, Dr. Kalarickal was the first cardiologist to start practising coronary angioplasty.
🔹During that time, the treatment available in our country for coronary artery heart disease was medical management and coronary artery by-pass surgery.
🔹In order to develop this new technology, he faced many hurdles and challenges. But luckily, he got supported from Dr. Prathap C.Reddy, the Chairman of the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.
🔹After joining with Apollo Hospitals, Chennai he successfully performed many coronary angioplasties. Soon the medical world realized the importance of this procedure in combating the coronary artery heart disease.
🔹As he has a strong belief and lives with the principle of "Knowledge is no knowledge, unless it is shared," he disseminated his knowledge and trained angioplasty techniques to many cardiologists all over India as well as all over South East Asia and Australia.
🔹Apart from Coronary stenting, Dr. Kalarickal also introduced carotid stenting, rotablation atherectomy procedures etc.
🔹Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Kalarickal has performed more than 25,000 angioplasties and thereby he helped the cardiac patients to attain new quality of life.
🔹Moreover, he is a founder chairman of National Angioplasty Registry of India, which is a forum for Interventional cardiologists of the country to learn from each other, streamline the standard of procedure and maintain International standards.

🔹Dr. Kalarickal, an astute clinical cardiologist has ultimately been honoured for his pioneering and innovative work in the field of Interventional cardiology by various awards including Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 1996 and Padmashri award by the Government of India in 2000.
